Diabetes Care Q & A

Who requires diabetes care?

Every person who has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes needs diabetes care. Diabetes occurs when your blood sugar levels are excessively high for a prolonged period.

Over time, high blood sugar can cause several serious types of damage in your body, including nerve damage and vascular problems.

However, with diabetes care, it can help you better manage your health and recognize problems before they have a chance to cause permanent damage like vision loss, kidney disease, heart disease, or stroke.

Because these problems usually develop rather slowly over the years, many people aren’t aware that they already have diabetes. People who show symptoms of develop diabetes and  are at risk (sometimes called prediabetes) also need diabetes care.

What does Type 2 diabetes care involve?

There are many aspects to Type 2 diabetes care at Border Clinic, PLLC, including:

  • Blood sugar (A1C) testing (averages blood sugar levels over the last three months)
  • Diabetes diagnosis
  • Early detection of neuropathy and diabetic retinopathy
  • Disease education
  • Nutrition guidance
  • Lifestyle guidance
  • At-home monitoring for blood sugar levels
  • A1C monitoring every three months
  • Blood sugar control through lifestyle changes
  • Medication to control blood sugar (if needed)

It’s important to approach Type 2 diabetes care from multiple angles, from medical monitoring and lifestyle management to getting healthy and preventing disease complications.

What does prediabetes care involve?

Prediabetes, in which you have high blood sugar but it doesn’t meet the threshold for a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, still requires regular diabetes care. This usually includes regular A1C testing, disease education, lifestyle guidance, and, in some cases, medication.

By making the right changes, you can prevent Type 2 diabetes.

What does Type 1 diabetes care involve?

Unfortunately, you can’t prevent Type 1 diabetes. However, with Type 2 diabetes, you can control your disease effectively with help from your Border Clinic, PLLC, provider.

When you have Type 1 diabetes, you’ll need to take the same steps, including living a healthy lifestyle, monitoring your blood sugar, and also taking insulin every day.

This involves either injecting it yourself or wearing an insulin pump that injects it for you. In addition to your diabetes management at Border Clinic, PLLC, your provider may work with a diabetes specialist (an endocrinologist) to control your Type 1 diabetes.
