STD Testing Q & A

What is STD testing?

STD testing encompasses a broad range of different medical tests to detect sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Through STD testing, you can learn about STDs early, even before they start to cause health problems. This allows you to take active steps to fight the disease and protect your health.

When might I need STD testing?

There are two reasons for STD testing: Routine screening and as-needed testing based on symptoms or risk factors.

Currently, routine screening guidelines include:

  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) testing at age 13-64 (at least once)
  • Chlamydia and gonorrhea screening for sexually active women 24 or younger (yearly)
  • Chlamydia and gonorrhea screening for people 25 and up who are at-risk for infection (yearly)
  • Syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C testing for pregnant women
  • Syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV testing for sexually active gay and bisexual men (yearly)
  • Hepatitis C testing for sexually active gay and bisexual men with HIV (yearly)
  • HIV testing for people who participate in high-risk sexual behaviors (yearly)
  • HIV testing for people who share needles for drug injections (yearly)

Other STD tests are available as well. You may need additional STD testing based on high-risk behaviors, for example, having sexual intercourse with a person infected with an STD. Or, if you you experience possible symptoms of an STD, you may also need testing.

What are the symptoms of an STD?

It’s not always obvious if you have an STD, which is why routine screening is so important. However, STDs can cause some obvious symptoms (particularly as they progress to more serious stages).

Some symptoms of STDs can include:

  • Unusual penile or vaginal discharge
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Vaginal odor
  • Itching within the penis
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Testicle pain
  • Lower abdominal and pelvic pain
  • Open sores on the genitals
  • Bumps or other unusual growths on the genitals
  • Rash on your hands, feet, or trunk
  • Fever

Some of these symptoms may appear with other men’s or women’s health issues, so it’s important to visit Border Clinic, PLLC, for an accurate diagnosis and treatment as soon as you notice symptoms.
